Medicinal Herbs
All of these herbs can be used in teas, bath teas and meals, please check safety for your own individual needs.
Dandelion Root and leaves – Cleansing and Detoxifying - Full of mineral salts such as Silicon, Iron, Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, Manganese, Copper and Phosphorus.
Powerful Diuretic action which is safe because of the replacement of many minerals.
The Bitter compounds in the root stimulate the flow of bile to aid digestion and boost a sluggish liver.
Great for PMS as it will clear excess hormones along with water retention.
Burdock Root – Cleansing and Detoxifying – Enhances immunity all round – similar action to Dandelion.
Cleavers – Cleansing and Detoxifying – Gets the Lymphatic system working efficiently, strengthening your liver and kidneys clearing our toxins, infection and waste.
A bitter herb good all round tonic and cleanse.
Echinacea – strengthening, protecting, anti-aging. – Contains immune strengthening chemicals much like our own bodies virus fighters.
Use for prevention and management of colds and flu, can support the bodies defence mechanisms in times of stress.
Anti-aging protects skin from enzyme breakdown and maintains good collagen and elastin levels.
Ginseng root – strengthening and protecting – An Adaptogen, powerful and good all round tonic and Rejuvenator. Can aid concentration and memory.
Helps to maintain blood sugar levels and therefore stabilise energy.
Long term use can protect against cancer and anti-aging.
Ginkgo – soothing, protecting- Improves circulation especially to the brain, preventative use and management of memory loss and poor concentration.
Good anti-depressant use also, improves mood and settles anxiety
Rosemary – Strengthening, protecting, mood elevating, anti-depressant – Raises spirits, uplifts mood, clears apathy, settles anxious tummies and good memory tonic.
Rosemary tea is bracing and uplifting.
Good for strengthening capillaries and producing collagen in the skin.
Avens Oat Straw – strengthening, protecting, - Lowers cholesterol, increases stamina and vigour. Anti-depressant action, increases libido.
Strengthening hair and nails.
Horsetail – Anti-aging –Rich in minerals such as Silicon which is hard to come by in a normal diet, this is essential for binding minerals and the production of collagen and elastin. It has an amazing 15 minerals and is a good source of bioflavonoids.
It can take many years for your body to become depleted in these minerals and it can take a few weeks for horsetail to restore these levels.
Angelica – stimulating and strengthening - Good for indigestion, bloating, wind, colds and fevers.
Stimulates circulation and energy in the body.
Fennel seeds- soothing, cleansing and detoxifying – soothes and calms the guts, can get rid of indigestion and wind. Chew the seeds after a meal to freshen the breathe and soothe digestion.
Good diuretic and can suppress appetite
Nettle – Cleanses strengthens and soothes- strengthens the liver, cleanses the blood. Rich in Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, iron and potassium. Good all round tonic can strengthen the stomach also.
Sage – calming, soothing, cleansing as a dried herb in the home. – sip sage tea at the end of a tiring day. Rich in calming minerals such as Magnesium, calcium and zinc, it can level out emotional mood swings, soothe frayed nerves. A good tea for tension
headaches and anxious tummies.
Goldenrod – cleansing and diuretic action – Gentle cleanse of the urine system. Can also soothe hay fever.
Parsley – cleansing and diuretic action – Is an excellent cleanser rich in Vitamins A and C as well as several B vitamins, calcium and Iron. Contains important plant chemicals that can speed up the flow of blood to the kidneys to help eliminate and cleanse the body of toxins.
Skullcap – Calming and soothing – calms frayed nerves, can be a real tonic to nerves. Can be really soothing as a tea when trying to give up smoking or other addictive substances.
Passionflower – sedative, soothing, calming – Has a sedative and mildly narcotic effect on the body, so is good for insomnia. The leaves carry the strength for deep relaxation and the effect is pretty immediate. Passionflower is good for woman and PMS as it helps with nervous tension around the time of the period or menopause.
Can help asthmas sufferers when their attack is brought on by stress, it is analgesic and anti-spasmodic.
Hops – Sedative and tonic action – Ideal for restoring calmness to frayed nerves, balancing and sedative. Also aphrodisiac in action.
Valerian Root – Sedative – Most potent of all the calming herbs, useful in lower doses when you feel tense day or night, but for insomnia use regularly at night before you go to bed, care must be taken as this herb can leave you feeling hungover and is best not to be used long term..
Camomile – soothing relaxing sleep enhancer – use with other herbs like passion flower for insomnia, or just general relation in teas during the day.
Lemon Balm – Calming and sedative – mild enough for children, anti anxiety properties, lifts depression and calms upset stomachs. Wonderful in teas or in the bath or even in massage oils.
Kava Kava – calming and sedative – a fantastic chill out herb – consciousness altering, quickest natural anti-depressant known to man, Calming to both mind and body, not for long term heavy useage though. (best used as an extract or tincture)
Peppermint – refreshing – clears the head and refreshes the taste buds, good to drink any time of the day, especially before during and after meals to help settle stomach and ease wind and bloating.
Elderberries – anti-aging, immune system support – supports the immune system , natural laxative, aids detox, can shorten the time of colds and bugs such as flu. Can break the chain of always being ill!!!
Red Clover – Natural HRT – Contains between 1 – 3% isoflavones which are gentle natural plant oestrogens.
Gotu Kola – Anti-aging – Has been used for centuries in India to extend lifespan and enhance memory.
